A new unified framework for Thompson-like groups using discrete operads is proposed. As a first application, we give sufficient conditions for operads to yield groups with finite type classifying spaces. This unifies and extends existing proofs for certain Thompson-like groups in a conceptual manner. Moreover, we discuss the vanishing of group cohomology for certain coefficients.
