Abstract

In this project we, as cultural encounters students try to compare and examine the representation of the conflict in Syria through President Bashar al-Assad´s speech and Syrian Asylum seekers interviews. We use Benedict Anderson´s theory about nation as an Imagined Community and Richard Jenkins´s work on Social Identity as main theoretical texts for the analysis. Our project does not show a definite authentic view of the conflict, since we have limited ourselves to the analysis of five interviews and one speech. Conflict is a complicated field of study and it is not possible to search for its different dimensions, that is why our emphasis is on the roles of Nation, Ethnicity and Religion through the process of identification and categorization. Theories used in the project are used to analyze the information through the perspective of social constraction and social interaction. Methodological considerations are built in accordance to qualitative research and inductive approach with deductive part. However we are not looking for confirmation of truth in our project, but showing realities regarding the conflict.
