Abstract

The present study was an outcome of fieldwork and intensive laboratory work carried out to understand the scientific principles behind the process and production of the famous superfine silk mats of Pathamadai in Tirunelveli District Tamil Nadu India Weaving of superfine silk mats has been a traditional handicraft involving highly skilled manpower and in depth understanding on locally available eco friendly raw materials Keeping this in focus detailed and systematic experiments involving culm anatomy fibre newlineCharacteristics phsyico mechanical properties epicuticular waxes have been done newlineFurther a tissue culture protocol was evolved for large scale propagation and to newlineunderstand the genetic stability of tissue cultured plants and assess the genetic similarity of wild plants collected from different locations by RAPD analysis newline newline newline%%%
