The present Master's thesis concerns the role of bishops in Icelandic society. The first part examines bishops' backgrounds and its influence on their position and politics. The second part deals with bishops' role in conflicts. Conflicts were the main field of the political game in Iceland. This part also studies how bishops' bakgrounds mirrowed in their partaking in conflicts. Knowledge of laws and education were extremely significant in Iceland. The third part examines bishops' role in lawmaking and educating processes at the country. The last part analyses the functions of the Icelandic bishops in the European context. The Icelandic pattern of the bishop's office is compared with the European one.
