The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a history of the rabbit in New Zealand and the attempts to control it. This history will be used to highlight the previous successes and errors in rabbit control and relate them to possible approaches in the future. It also is a useful guide when looking at the control of other noxious animals, allowing comparisons between the approaches used, the effectiveness of control and the assistance given for control. There are some striking similarities between rabbit control in the nineteen twenties, thirties, and forties, and possum control today. The lessons learnt in rabbit control may be of value when applied to other noxious animals.
