The experimental work for this thesis was planned to secure information as to the effect of limestone applied to an acid soil (1) on the growth of legumes, (2) on the activities of tuberclue bacteria, and (3) on the amount of nitrogen secured from the air by symbiotic fixation. A minor experiment was added to determine the effect of quantities of organic matter on the location of nodules. In working on these problems it was found possible to obtain information of other points of interest. These will be presented as they more or less naturally introduce themselves in connection with the other work.
