Abstract

One of the characteristics of the individual with peptic ulceration is that he is likely to have a large number of parietal cells in his stomach than a normal person. As the parietal cell is responsible for the secretion of gastric acid, it is suggested that the number of parietal cells that an individual has may be related to the presence or absence of peptic ulceration. Two main hypothesis have been advanced to explain variations in the parietal cell mass. Cox has suggested that an increase in the number of parietal cells follows excessive and prolonged application of stimuli for gastric acid secretion. [...]
