Abstract

The present investigation deals with the microscopic changes which occur in the pancreatic gland of the cat, when this animal issubjected to parasympathetic and sympathetic stimulation. The object was (1) to establish more accurately than haspreviously been done the relations between the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems and the externalsecretory cellular elements of the pancreas; (2) to investigate the effect of sympatho- and parasympathomimetic drugson these elements; (3) to study the morphological changes which take place in the islands of Langerhans under theconditions mentioned in (1) and (2) above; and (4) to obtain some histophysiological data which would throw more light on the complicatedrelations between the exocrine and endocrine tissues of the pancreas.
