Abstract

"As the regions surrounding the smelteries are growing more densely populated, the companies operating in these districts find if necessary in many cases to take care of their waste gases which are injurious to the surrounding vegetation and thereby avoid many expensive lawsuits and claims from the land owners in the district...The smelters at once began to look around for some method of taking care of their fumes...The companies then began to install the more expensive process of handling their fumes by adding a sulphuric acid plant to their smeltery. This is very expensive to install but is not only a self-surporting [sic] process but if operated efficiently will net the company a good yearly income" – Introduction, p. 1-2.
