Abstract

In this survey the writer will be concerned with mental hygiene in its practice which directly assists children living at home in the Province of Quebec. The study will concern an analysis of the provisions in the province for the detection, diagnosis and treatment of children with social and emotional problems. These children will be those “who are in distress because of unsatisfied inner needs, or are seriously at outs with their environment - children whose development is thrown out of balance by difficulties which reveal themselves in unhealthy traits, unacceptable behaviour, or inability to cope with scholastic and social expectations.” Only those agencies or clinics organized specifically to perform a diagnostic or treatment service for the above type of patient will be included in this survey. It is not proposed to study services provided for mentally retarded, mentally defective or physically handicapped children. As stated above, the analysis will be made of the clinics’ direct service to children living at home. However, to give a more complete picture of what is actually being done, it will be necessary to mention any additional services provided.[...]
