Abstract

???Two of every five students enrolling in 4-year institutions following high school fail to earn a bachelor???s degree: One in four leave before beginning the sophomore year??? (Napoli & Wortman, 1996, p. 15) Thus, the high degree of failures for incoming students is a very serious problem. To address this problem a study was designed in the form of a survey to gather information from these at-risk students. The survey was in fact administered some four times due to problems that developed. The first administration was given to some 900 students, only six were returned. Three more attempts were made, with the final attempt seeing changes in the survey and administration. Though there was some analysis on the final attempt, there were still so few responses that it was considered a bias response. However, this alone was considered a significant result and that lead to the suggestions that will follow. A change in both survey instrument and administration is felt to be necessary: A reworking and expansion of the instrument, and a change in its administration such that is now a requirement for first-year freshman. Advisors/Committee Members: Zartman, Charles G (advisor).
