Explicit teaching of reading strategies to community college ESL students in the USA: a curriculum development project

This curriculum development project focuses on helping community college ESL students to develop their English reading skills. The curriculum included in this project has been developed based on the students??? needs for success in American colleges and universities. The feasibility and efficiency of the curriculum have been evaluated through two pilot studies, and curriculum materials have been modified based on the results obtained. This curriculum includes a series of 13 workshops: Previewing Techniques , Skimming and Scanning, Vocabulary Boosts (1,2) , Topic and Main idea, Supporting Major and Minor, Pattern of Organization, Outlining, Annotating, Writing Summary, Writing Reflection, Inferences. Each workshop includes rationale, lesson plan, handout, and practice exercises. In addition to the lesson materials, this project presents all the study process in which the curriculum has been developed. This project allows the teachers, based on the needs of their students, to incorporate their own materials to get maximum of efficiency in their classroom. Moreover, the handouts and practice exercises for this project create a self- study opportunity for the students who desire independently study these reading strategies. The goal of this curriculum is to provide community college ESL students with the knowledge of reading strategy use to become more skilled and confident in reading their college courses.
