Abstract

Understanding the dynamic electrical response of charged or uncharged hydrogel sandwiched in a parallel-plate configuration (fixed bottom plate and top floating plate) is vital if such a configuration is to be adopted as a bio-sensing platform or developed to characterize the rheological and physicochemical properties of hydrogels. Using an interferometric displacement device, this study measures small-amplitude electric-field-induced displacements (order of picometres to micrometres) in an hydrogel-embedded parallel plate configuration. It also measures the response to an impulse perturbation, and reports how the top-plate displacement amplitude and oscillation frequency reflect the hydrogel viscoelasticity and thickness.
