This Project deals with the analysis of tramway foundations in Queensland sugar mills. Initially an investigation was carried out to determine the deflection characteristics of the sleeper. From this the pressure distribution on the underside of the sleeper could be calculated. The shape of this distribution proved markedly different from that achieved by wider gauge track. An analysis o f ballast depth requirements was now made. Subgrade parameters were required to relate ballast depth to differing subgrade conditions. The subgrade parameters chosen were the modulus of elasticity and Poissons ratio. Using a finite element method, stress and deflections throughout the system could be calculated for each depth o f construction and subgrade condition. From this information design charts relating ballast depth and subgrade conditions were formulated.
