Abstract

This thesis deals with Virginia Woolf s To the Lighthouse and Colin Gregg s film adaptation of Woolf s novel. My critical concern is to discuss Woolf s novel and Gregg s film. I am particularly interested in characterization of main characters in both media. I explore how the written and the visual media present characters in these two different art forms. Thus the aim of this thesis is to examine the characterization of Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay in both Woolf s novel and in Gregg s adaptation. I show how Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay are presented and portrayed in both the novel and the film. I discuss how characterization of Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay is conceived, generated and executed by Woolf and Gregg. One of the aims of this thesis is to explore the characterization of the main characters in relation to narrative theory.
