Abstract

We must always carefully distinguish between the explanation of the existence of interest and the condemnation of, or apology for, interest. In this thesis I shall try to isolate the explanations of the nature and origin of interest, according to the various theories, from the answers to the subsidiary questions: Ought interest to exist at all? (a) If not, can we abolish it, and how? (b) If so, what is the proper policy that statesmen should have in regard to interest on capital? [...]
