Abstract

"This area has been of minor importance in the production of ore on a commercial scale, the ore mined being residual in clay in openings occuring [sic] in dolomite and with chert, all near the surface, the mining being done by individuals who felt disposed to sink a shaft on some supposedly mineralized spot in the hope of uncovering a few tons or ore. Mining operations have been carried on intermittently for more than a century, so we are told, the early miners breaking the rock by first heating it with a wood fire, and then suddenly cooling it with water. All ore mined has been purchased by a company at Palmer. Some years ago, two smelters or ore hearths were in operation but both have ceased, and the small amount of ore mined at the present time is hauled to Potosi in wagons" – Economic Geology, Mine Development, Page 13.
