Abstract

"The feasibility of constructing a canal communication between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and crossing the American Isthmus has been discussed and written on since the time of Columbus, but the subject has attained its present popularity only with the last few years. For several years past the [press] has almost certainty kept the project before the public and the indications now are that [in] the close of the 19th century some one of the many schemes that has been suggested will be in active operation. There has been various routes suggested for canals with and without locks. This paper will only give a very short description of the more important routes, together with their c advantages and their commercial bearings so far as the data at hand will permit" – p. [1].
