"The stratigraphy and structure of the Wisconsin Zinc and Lead District are remarkably simple; so simple in fact that one is liable to under estimate their importance in relation to the ore deposits. But four formations are of interest to one operating in this district, all of which are Ordovician in age and which in ascending order are, - the St. Peter sandstone, the Platteville limestone, the Galena dolomite, and the Maquoketa shale" – Geology - Stratigraphy - General, p. 1.
