In 1620 Sir Allen Apsley was Lieutenant of the Tower of London. Observant tourists passing the lodgings of the Lieutenant early in February of that year might have seen signs of unusual bustling and excitement, for a girl-child had been born to the Lieutenant's wife on January 29th. She was christened Lucy, and was destined to have her name live through the centuries as one of the heroines of the English Civil War.
