Abstract

The great progress in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries gave the field of chemical equilibrium a great impetus; these considerations, however, deal only with probability states, and, moreover, are static in treatment; thus no fundamental knowledge was forthcoming of the interaction processes by which the actual chemical change took place. Chemical kinetics, however, With the emphasis on the characteristics of the reaction is the connecting link; and together with the knowledge obtained from thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, forms an efficient mode of attack.
