Hydrogen energy has recently been considered as one of the most promising solutions to sustainable and clean energy. However, the storage of hydrogen still faces huge challenges. Magnesium base alloys can be used for hydrogen storage because they can react with hydrogen to form magnesium hydrides, as well as their high hydrogen capacity, lightness, and low cost. Mg-Ni alloys are of great interests due to its glass forming ability – amorphous structure. In the present work, melt-spun technique has been used to synthesis Mg-Ni alloy with amorphous structure, and its hydrogen storage quality has been analysed. Mg-Ni alloy with nominal composition of Mg-10at.%Ni has been synthesized using melt-spun technique, and ribbon-shape product have been obtained. The micro structure of the ingots has been characterized using scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectrum. The crystal structure of the MgsoNiro sample has been determined using X-ray diffraction. Phase transformation during heating and cooling has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry in Ar and Hz atmosphere. Hydrogen uptake capability has been investigated using intelligent gravimetric analyser. The effect of catalyst NbzOs has also been examined.
