Abstract

Instructions for Preservation is a collection of poetry that is guided by an impulse to give utterance to an extended period of isolation and foreignness, through the theoretical languages of physics and mathematics. Also borrowed are the voices of Rainer Maria Rilke, Lorine Niedecker, Pierre de Fermat, and many figures encountered at home and abroad, as the speaker constantly seeks language to accommodate seemingly unspeakable traumas. Woven into these pieces are recurring questions surrounding violence and its effect on the observer, as well as a sustained interrogation of the properties of light, complicating the familiar metaphor of light as a positive phenomenon. Towards its conclusion, the focus of this collection shifts towards manual work and the tactile world, with a recognition of the limit to which scientific frameworks can predict, regulate, or reconcile human experience.Advisors/Committee Members: Holmberg, Karen E.
