Abstract

This thesis is dedicated to the synthesis of well-defined colloidal NCs and their application in CO oxidation. In addition to general aspects of NCs synthesis, protocols for NCs-based catalyst preparation and activation were developed. In addition, transformations of the NCs upon exposure to different reaction environments were thoroughly studied in the attempt to establish structure-activity correlations. The results of this thesis can be used as a guideline for the design, characterization, and evaluation of the catalytic activity of these materials, especially NCs with metal-metal oxide nanodumbbell morphology. More specifically, in the study of the structure-activity relationship in CO oxidation, the results presented in this thesis can help to understand the true nature of the catalytic active sites of advanced and tailored catalytic materials. Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der Synthese von definierten kolloidalen NCs und deren Anwendung in der CO-Oxidation. Zustzlich zu den allgemeinen Aspekten der NCs-Synthese wurden Protokolle fr die NCs-basierte Katalysatorherstellung und -aktivierung entwickelt. Darber hinaus wurden Transformationen der NCs bei der Exposition gegenber verschiedenen Reaktionsumgebungen sorgfltig untersucht, um Strukturaktivittskorrelationen herzustellen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit knnen als Leitfaden fr den Design, die Charakterisierung und die Bewertung der katalytischen Aktivitt dieser Materialien, insbesondere NCs mit Metall-Metalloxid-Nanodumbbell-Morphologie, verwendet werden. Die in dieser Arbeit dargestellten Ergebnisse knnen dazu beitragen, bei der Untersuchung der Strukturwirkungsbeziehung in der CO-Oxidation, die wahre Natur der katalytisch aktiven Stellen der fortgeschrittenen und mageschneiderten katalytischen Materialien zu verstehen.Advisors/Committee Members: Comoretto, Davide (advisor), Ballester, Pablo (advisor), Reiser, Oliver (advisor), Colombo, Massimo (advisor).
