Informing the Implementation of the Cougar Pantry through a Needs Assessment

Abstract

California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) has recognized the need to address food insecurity among the campus community through the implementation of a food pantry. Results from the CSUSM American College Health Association-National College Health assessment (ACHA-NCHA II) campus survey conducted Spring 2016 showed that approximately fifty percent of CSUSM students have low food security. Associated Students Inc. (ASI) has taken on the campus pantry initiative and started a campaign to educate students and address the high rates of food insecurity. However, student and staff perspectives on operational aspects of the food pantry are needed. The present study will provide recommendations for the implementation of the Cougar Pantry. Recommendations of pantry operations were based on models of other successful pantries and were founded on qualitative themes gathered from students and staff participants.Advisors/Committee Members: Santos, AsherLev (advisor), Holub, Christina (committeemember).
