Pulse timing in CW mode-locked Nd:YLF lasers

Abstract

The influence of various noise sources on CWmode-locked laser pulse timing is investigated. Measurements areperformed on a Nd:YLF laser to confirm timing dependence on cavitylength and acousto-optic modulator characteristics. Simple modelsare used to understand and predict the influence of thermal load onthe modulator and to predict the sensitivity of timing to pump andcavity loss modulation. For lasers similar to those investigated,cavity loss changes are expected to be significantly more importantthan gain medium pump fluctuations on pulse timing. The modulatorperformance was also found to deviate from ideal-casepredictions.
