Abstract

Teaching Algebraic Manipulations to Students with DisabilitiesA non-symbolic methodology was designed, and field tested for solving algebra and geometry problems within a special education high school mathematics classroom and then compared to the achievements of general education students given a different methodology, but the same curriculum. The results show that the achievements of the special education population were comparable to those with the general education population, suggesting minimizing difficult abstract mathematical concepts and algebraic manipulations.
