Evaluation of a Tessar lens on axis

An old and yet still interesting problem in opticsis the quality testing of lenses. All of the older methods requiredthat the testing be performed an an actual sample of the lens. Anewer concept is that of determining the characteristics of a lenssolely from the design data without making the lens. Whileclassical ray tracing data give much information on a lens, it isonly through the use of modern high-speed computers that it ispossible to get very complete quality information beforeconstruction. </br> In this thesis is described aside by side comparison of the results obtained from the analysisof the design data and the results taken by measuring acommercially made sample of the lens. The latter measurements arethe contribution of the writer and include photographic resolvingpower, photoelectric spot energy, and sine-wave response. The lenswas studied on axis, both sides of best focus, and in three colorsof light and daylight.
