An X-ray crystallographic study of SO3 containingcompounds

The introductory chapter covers a review ofintermolecular interactions with examples of host-guest systems,including sulfonates. As X-ray crystallography is the maincharacterisation tool used in this thesis its theory and practiceare described in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 presents a study of thegeometry of RnSO3 molecules carried out using the CambridgeCrystallographic Database and associated software. An X-ray powderdiffraction study of the crystallisation products obtained fromaqueous solution containing guanidinium and sulfite ions isdescribed in Chapter 4. The crystal structure of a novel sodiumsulfate/chloride is also reported in this chapter.Chapter 5presents the crystal structure of a novel sodium calcium chloridesulfate and a redetermination of sodium sulfite, both of whichcrystallised from deoxygenated aqueous solutions.Chapter 6describes attempts at crystallising transition metal complexes withSO32-containing ligands which also participate in hydrogen bonding.Also, two novel crystal structures are reported in thischapter.Conclusions and suggestions for further work are presentedin the final chapter and the structure of three copper (0)dipyridyl methanol complexes, two of them novel, are reported inAppendix 1.Advisors/Committee Members: Pritchard, Robin.
