Abstract

Bibliography: pages 33-34 "The goal of this paper is to assert that the painterly non-photorealistic rendering of surfaces and textures in the computer game 'Team Fortress 2' (2007 Valve Corporation) has influenced look development in contemporary 3D animation films. This paper will focus on creating stylized look development through rendering of hand-painted textures of surfaces. This was achieved in my film, 'Expelled', using a mixture of hand-painted and procedurally generated textures to make the final film look like non-photorealistic concept art. By using painterly textures that have loose details and visible broken brush strokes, the artist has the potential in making an animated film look impressionistic. The makers of 'Team Fortress 2' (2007 Valve Corporation) were one of the first to set a standard for achieving painterly looking 3D renders which became a popular style. This demystified technique gave birth to a recent phenomenon of making contemporary 3D animation films look like hand-painted concept art. This stylized look continues to be implemented in film and games despite a significant development in photorealistic rendering. Films like 'Salesman Pete' (2010 S.T.E.A.K Kollective), 'Meet Buck' (2011 Team Cerf) and 'Mac N Cheese' (2011 Colorbleed) are some great examples of films that experimented with painterly rendering. The same way 2D animation utilized traditional methods to paint in color, contemporary 3D animation filmmakers and game developers have been heavily influenced by art of early painters and illustrators."
