Architecture Integrated within a Receptive City

As part of the seventh semester of the undergraduate architecture program, the first studio project was a collaboration with Aracely Landero to design a tower located in New York City, New York. The large scale and high density of New York City provided the opportunity to conceptualize many aspects within the city. With the freedom to determine where our project could be placed in the city, we decided that lower Manhattan incorporated a diverse application of these aspects to strengthen the design ideas for our project. Further research of the area brought us to discover the disastrous recent history of Manhattan and the initiatives that have been planned to preserve the area for the future. Design features and programmatic features were incorporated in the project to respect the elements of the proposed initiatives that would prevent further disastrous events. Other elements such as sunlight, water, energy, and programmatic needs were also incorporated to further enhance the project. With all these elements combined, a triumphant tower with mixed uses and diverse characteristics will be the proposal to eliminate the sterile skyscraper that currently exists within the site and serve as an archetype for architecture to lead the surrounding area of lower Manhattan to take advantage of the strenuous attempts to benefit the city for generations.
