Of Books and Burial Ships: A Study on 9th and 10th Century Viking Colors

This thesis examines two Viking aged sourcesthe literary collection entitled the "Poetic Edda" and an archeological find known as the Oseberg Viking ship burialfor references to color and hue in 9th and 10th century Scandinavia to see if there is acorrelation in color usage between the fictional Viking world and that of the actual Viking world. Select poems, textiles, and ornaments from both sources are thoroughly examined for references to color or allusions to color. Recurrent themes such as color contrasts, absences of color, and usage of precious metals to indicate to color are discussed. Although more research will need to be done on the subject, the conclusions of the research do point to a correlation between the two sources in regard to the repeated usage of color contrasts. ( en )
