Abstract

This paper estimates the effect of legal access toalcohol on academic performance. I find that legal access toalcohol has a negative effect on academic performance, but themagnitude is smaller than previously documented. Exploiting therichness of an administrative data set that links academicperformance to student activities, I test for heterogeneous impactsacross dimensions not previously studied. Notably I find there isno significant effect of legal access for fraternity and sororitymembers. Complementing the main analysis with a university widesurvey on alcohol consumption provides additional clarity. Underagedrinking is prevalent, suggesting that the marginal increase indrinking at age 21 may be smaller in this setting than others.Additionally, the marginal increase in drinking by fraternity andsorority members is smaller than that by non-members.Advisors/Committee Members: Smith, Austin (Advisor).
