Abstract

Hadhf, is an Arabic linguistic and rhetorical device used in many places in the Qur'an. Given that Hadhf has mostly been translated as ellipsis, this work looks at meanings and functions of both Hadhf and ellipsis, and convergences and divergences are highlighted. A contrastive analysis is done on how instances of Hadhf in Surah An-Nur is rendered in the selected translations, using the functional grammatical approach explained by Christiane Nord. The research looks into the extent to which the translations are in consonance with the ST, relying on books of Tafsir, works on sciences of the Qur'an and on the theory of adequacy as espoused by Gideon Toury. Since Hadhf is a feature that frequently occurs in the Qur'an, and it has yet to enjoy a detailed methodical academic study, it is hoped that this thesis will be a contribution in this respect.
