This thesis examines the role of the National Book Institute (Instituto Nacional do Livro – INL) during the Estado Novo (1937-1945) in Brazil, a period led by Getúlio Vargas, focusing on how the language and terms used in newspapers and books promoted by the INL contributed to the Social Organization of Knowledge (SOK) during this time. The general objective of the thesis is to investigate the SOK at the INL during the Estado Novo in Brazil through discursive and terminological analysis. The specific objectives are: (a) to analyze the SOK practices implemented by the INL during the Estado Novo, examining the political and disciplinary motivations behind these actions; (b) to discuss the discursive materiality of newspapers and their influence on the SOK and bibliographic movement during the Estado Novo; and (c) to map and systematize the main terms used to promote literature and publications in newspapers and books published by the INL during the Estado Novo in Brazil. The research problem is outlined as follows: how was the language used in newspapers and books about the INL strategically employed to convey concepts and influence society, promoting literature and publications? How did these terminological strategies contribute to the SOK in the context of the Estado Novo?In this context, the research adopts a qualitative exploratory-descriptive approach, using documentary and bibliographic research methods. Two main procedures were employed: Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and terminological analysis. The CDA examines how discourses were constructed and the linguistic strategies used to influence public opinion. The terminological analysis focuses on investigating the specific terms used and their impact on the construction of meanings.The results highlight the relevance of the INL as a foundational institution in articulating a state ideology that used SOK as a strategic device to consolidate the values of the Estado Novo regime. The analysis of the works published by the INL demonstrates how the selection and use of terms helped construct a symbolic imaginary that supported the government's vision of modernity. Additionally, a mini-system in the form of a glossary for knowledge organization was developed, based on descriptors extracted from journalistic sources, documents, and books from the Estado Novo period.This study contributes to the field of Information Science, particularly to Knowledge Organization (KO), by demonstrating how documents and institutions were used as instruments of ideological apparatus and preservation of collective memory. Observing the terms and discourses promoted in the newspapers, books, and documents of the period revealed that the INL employed strategic discourse laden with "ideological terms" to legitimize the government. Furthermore, the discursive materiality present in these documents contributed to constructing a narrative aligned with the political precepts of the regime.
