Nursing Scope of Practice is every nurse's guidebook to understanding this terrain. It strips away the confusion and provides a comprehensive, coherent explanation of the nursing scope of practice so nurses can work to the full extent of their abilities and licensing.
Nurses will learn what they need to do to keep their patients safe, stay within the legal limits of a nursing license, as well as their employer's policies. Just as important, nurses will also learn how to expand their practice by taking on new roles and expand the scope of practice in a safe and responsible manner.
Nursing leaders, government regulators, and scholars will learn how the nursing scope of practice defines the profession, and how the scope of practice can be used to promote nursing professionalism.
Douglas Long brings a wealth of nursing experience from more than a decade in emergency departments and acute care. He is the author of Nursing: Moving Forward (2020), which describes the work of nurse regulators across the United States and worldwide.
REVIEWS and WORDS OF PRAISE
This book is a thought-provoking presentation of the scope of existing nursing practice. It is sure to encourage more dialogue among nurses and review of current practice policies with an eye to further learning, change, and growth within the profession.
--Pamela A. Baj, RN, PhD, FAAN, Professor of Nursing, San Francisco State University
Douglas Long’s Nursing Scope of Practice brings into focus the blurred lines where nursing performs its duties and what is expected of us. Looking for standards within the nursing practice leads us to run in circles. Doug provides some excellent examples of how our quest for expanded roles is frustrated by the shortcomings of our own systems.
--David Daniels, RN, Author, Oh, Nurse!
Nursing Scope of Practice can fundamentally change the nursing profession, motivating nurses to become stronger in our practice and collaborate as equals on healthcare teams. Douglas Long’s research in my country and worldwide has provided him a unique perspective that is presented in this book.
--Ia Gelendize, Executive Director , Union of Nurses, Republic of Georgia
